In one word…FUN! This album has no real musicianship, well-written
lyrics or seriousness to it, and the amazing thing is, it doesn’t
matter! It is a fun joyride from the first ill sung note to the
last of the numerous swear words thrown in for no apparent reason!
Monroe is a re-release of a 1996 album plus 3 new tracks.
Cherry
St’s sound has been compared to AC/DC and it does have that
influence but I heard 3 more bands as well. The guitar riffs and
licks made me feel a Ted Nugent influence, the catchy songs were
reminiscent of Kix and the obvious one is the Bulletboys, as one
of their vocalists is former Bullet Boys front man Marq Torein.
Former Roxx Gang lead singer Kevin Steel also joins this riotous
act!
The
corny “Dogtown” starts the ride and the horrible lyrics
are laughable but wasn’t their a niche for this type of stuff
in the late 80’s and early 90’s? Dozens of bands used
proceeds from this kind of Rock to bail each other out of jail!
Ha Ha! On a more serious note,” Jokers Wild” is a great
example of Ted Nugent style riffs, with catchy poker themed lyrics.
The guitar is clean and melodic throughout as it is played by Perris
records President and founder Tom Mathers, especially on “Comes
Around Goes Around”, and “Soft And Slow”. “One
More Tonight” was a dead ringer for a Kix track, and “Break
Me,” sounded much like an AC/DC track that never left found
its way off of the cutting room floor! The lyrics on “Bite
the Bullet” -Boy” makes you think of, well you see where
I’m going …the comparisons are endless and inescapable
as there is not much originality to the album at all. Nonetheless
every once in a while it sure is fun hearing party tracks with good
melodies and no reference of death or evil rituals!
