Talk about a walk down memory lane … when I threw in The
Crushing Design, I expected to be taken for a ride, but I had
no idea how far. Horrorscope uses extremely fast and hard-charging
guitars, which are eerily reminiscent of two of my favorite bands,
Exodus and Overkill, circa 1988. This is certainly “thrash
metal” of the highest degree.
Formed
in 1997 in Poland, their main influences were Priest and Slayer,
and they bring that same kind of spirit in their own quality music.
Pistelok and Smiechowicz rip, tear and shred their way through 11
songs with fast, skilled rhythms and burning mach 5-style difficult
solos like in “One Minute Queen,” and especially on
“Killed by Permission,” one of the best metal songs
of the last 10 years.
Their
guitar playing is unique, so even though one hears other bands’
influences in the music, they take it to another level of skill.
The 1:26 instrumental “Room #2,” is spectacular deep,
dark, fast, hard, heavy and difficult. Actually, it’s just
plain SICK! The vocals of Brylka are solid throughout, like when
he expertly sings “killing me,” several times in “One
Minute Queen,” which sounds a lot like Godsmack singer Sully
Erna, and he also sounds awesome singing on “Between Two Hearts.”
The lyrics need a little work at times as seen on 24/7, where that
phrase is repeated over and over for no apparent reason. Finally,
did I mention the amazingly fast, clean, seriously sick, pounding
guitar rides? This album has some wonderful kick-ass guitar rides.
There you go. Stop clowning around, go get this CD. Put it in, and
let it play; you won’t regret it, trust me.
