The name may or may not be familiar to you, Jim Capaldi has been
involved in the music in one way another for over three decades.
He was writing partners with Steve Winwood in Traffic. Jim is also
known for his solo work, he penned the classic 1975 hit "Love
Hurts," "That's Love" in 1982 and "Something
So Strong" in 1989/90. I would have never matched the name
to the songs. That's why his newest CD release was such a surprise
to me. The first track "Poor Boy Blue" left me thinking
"ya, whatever...a typical blues groove." But once I got
down to listening to the CD I was really surprised by the great
tunes and musicianship that was coming forth from my speakers.
This
is not heavy metal but really great AOR music. I find it to be a
nice change of pace over melodic rock and metal CDs that have come
across my desk in recent months. Listening to a CD not driven by
guitars alone and featuring some different instrumentation gives
my ears some much needed respite. "Edge of Love," "Into
the Void," "Secrets in the Dark" are a great AOR
tracks. Each track is heavy on melody; great vocals and the overall
groove of all the tracks are very pleasant to listen to.
For
the pure guitar fan check out the guitar work on, "California
Sunset." It doesn't have to be fast metalized guitar riffs
and solos to be considered good!
