Here we have the new group Kaura five song self-titled EP. The band
is piloted by Malcolm Guess (vocals/instrumentation) and Benjamin
Jones (drums/instrumentation). The group’s vision is to meld
the aggressive sounds of hard, melodic rock with the textures of
ancient instruments. They have sought out acquiring exotic instruments
and modifying existing ones to create this dynamic musical vision.
Malcolm
Guess vocals fall into the vein of the main stream music currently
hitting the air waves near you. He has a pleasant voice and doesn’t
lean toward the garish vocals of most nu metal groups. The instrumentation
on the CD is well done and the CD is well produced.
Everyone
has to have their on gimmick to pave the way to success. After listening
to the EP, one can hear five well written songs. The unique and
self described experimentation with exotic instruments does not
stand heavily in the mix of the songs. Don’t get me wrong
you can hear some subtle textures but the vocals, guitars and drums
dominant the tracks.
Kaura
is joined by Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Zwan) who played
violin on “Dividing Lines.” Malcolm Guess recorded and
produced the CD drawing from his experience as a sound engineer.
The band is rounded out by Joe Joe Hauler (b) and Ben Rojas (g)
who will play a role in the future songwriting of the band.
It
is but a brief musical ride into the world of Kaura. The listener
will be left wanting more. So let’s look forward to a full
length release hopefully in the near future.
Line-up:
Malcolm Guess (v), Benjamin Jones (d), Joe Hauler (b), Ben Rojas
