Long time classic rock vocalist for hire, Tommy Funderburk’s
release Anything For You is anything but exceptional! Funderburk
a vocalist of high caliber manages to surround himself with sub-par
musicianship. The first example of this is an awkwardly placed frantic
guitar solo 2 ½ minutes into the first song “Learning
How To Love”. The solo is so misplaced and strange that the
song struggles forward almost as if on crutches!
The
rhythm guitar of J.M Scattolin is sound but the solos from lead
guitarist Rob Vanni while clean are unimaginative and at times misplaced.
Their below average lyrics hearken back to the precursory one ballad
per metal album in the mid to late 80’s, as they fall well
short of the classic guitar ballad perfectionists Journey or Toto
and into the realm of a poor mans Richard Marx or Bryan Adams. Four
songs with the word "love" in the title seems a bit excessive,
and the final track “Say a Little Prayer” (for the children),
is the final sappy straw! After a generation of work with bands
such as Motley Crue, Boston and Reo Speedwagon, one would have expected
a stronger effort, full of well-crafted songs, which would finally
allow Tommy to take the FRONT of the stage. Unfortunately on this
album that never occurs!
