Beyond Twilight
For the Love of Art and the Making Nightmare Records

by Derric Miller
Staff Writer

Comments:There is but one band in the pantheon of heavy metal artists who denies definition, redefines boundaries on every release and embraces their eclectic calling. That would be Beyond Twilight, a band you cannot pigeonhole, dissect, and quite possibly, even understand. Beyond Twilight mastermind Finn Zierler is obviously one of the most brilliant composers in metal today, but brilliance doesn't always correlate to writing songs people want to hear. That isn't a thought that Zierler pays heed to; Beyond Twilight marches to the beat of a drum no one can hear but Zierler himself.

Beyond Twilight's last release, Section X, was one of the best CDs of 2005. With singer Kelly Carpenter (Outworld) taking over for the renowned Jorn Lande, expectations were at an all-time high. Well, Carpenter is actually a better fit for the band than Lande was, and Section X amazed everyone. Something happened along the way, and Carpenter left, leaving the vocal position vacant until Bjorn Jansson was called upon. Somehow, the band keeps finding talent of the same vein as Lande, and they haven't missed a step on their new CD, For the Love of Art and the Making.

For the Love of Art and the Making is a 38-minute song carved into 43 separate tracks. Yeah, that's right. 43. When Zierler discussed the new CD in a Hardrock Haven interview, he said that you can put the song on "skip" because it still works regardless of the song order. How that is possible sort of hurts the brain. Not only that, but one of the tracks, "The Black Box of Reverse (Sleeping Beauty)," is composed backwards. No, it's not played forwards and then reversed on the CD. He literally composed the song backwards and then played it forwards, which is really backwards. Make sense? Good.

There are extreme tempo changes, beautiful orchestration and choir effects, screaming guitars and vocals, off the charts musicianship at every level … but it's a lot to digest for any fan. This isn't baby food for your ears-it's like Zierler's first language is music, but no one else is fluent. So, while the music will drop your jaw in awe, it is not the kind of music you'll throw in at a party and get everyone to groove to.

How Beyond Twilight pushes the envelope next time remains to be seen. For the Love of Art and the Making is one of those CDs you have to experience at least once, but your level of patience and ability to discern and ingest the tiers of music Zierler throws at you will decide how many times you go back to this CD.
