Niacin
Organik Magna Carta Records

by Matthew Hoffman
Staff Writer

Comments: The latest of the funk ship jam session jazz-fusion rock records is entitled Organik. And the name couldn't be more accurate! There are 3 piece bands popping up all over as this project started by legendary rockers Sheehan, Chambers and Novello. 10 years ago seems to be where all metal headbangers go when they are really ready for true unadulterated care free expression.

The most popular American versions are the Alex Skolnick Trio and OHM, which are fronted by expert guitarists Alex Skolnick (Testament), and Chris Poland (Megadeth). Each band in this emerging genre has their own approach; in Niacin's case it is really 99% pure jam session and heavily slanted towards the Hammond organ and piano parts of John Novello. The music sounds so pure; in fact it seems they had no other choice but to call it Organik.

This CD is cool as an early evening sea breeze, but has its moments that get you off your butt and ready to party. Sheehan is as good as a bassist can be of course and as earlier stated Novello is off the proverbial hook on the ivory keys. Chambers is steady throughout on the skins and provides the lead sometimes and the background mood at others. The best jam on this '70s style free spirited funk-ride is not easy to pick but if forced to do so is "Club Soda," a brilliant trip from start to finish. This cd is great for real musicians, music lovers and pretty much any one that likes to relax to some good wine, a sunset, a pretty face and some good conversation.

Just don't go into this thinking it's purely a rock or metal record or you will be seriously disappointed. These guys produce funk with a capital F.
