Former
Shrapnel shredder, Stephen Ross, joins forces with guitarist Ron Cannella,
vocalist Dale Toth and drummer Rich Mattalian to form Rogosonic. Their
debut CD titled, Leave the World Alone, mixes a hard edge guitar sound
with melodic overtones and a hint of blues inspired nostalgia.
With
the pedigree if Ross and the inclusion of Mattalian it should come
as no surprise that this is a guitar oriented release. Both guitarists
demonstrate that they have a handle on their instrument delivering
tight rhythm work and fast, fluid melodic solos. Merging there fret
work with Dale Toth’s bluesy, rock n’ roll voice, Rogosonic
is able to transcend the typical guitar jam CD release as the group
together puts forth a solid opus as a band.
The
guitar work colors the sky like a rainbow as Ross and Mattalian dabble
with different flavors of musical elements. From fusion, jazz, and
blues to progressive and heavy riffs the duo provide enough dynamics
to keep Leave the World Alone interesting. Dale Toth’s is also
capable of vary his voice as each song dictates. His voice has that
classic 70s rock vibe, and can be described as having similarities
with Tommy Shaw of Styx fame merged in with a bit of John Sykes. Early
on one can hear progressive elements that remind you of Masterplan’s
Jorn Lande.
Leave
the World Alone rocks hard in all the right places…there are
moments of triviality, but for the most part Rogosonic give enough
gas to get you through. The CD also includes Toshi Iseda, Joy Basu
and Rusty Cooley who provide their niche guitar solo abilities.
