PR Companies serve a purpose. They attempt to get their clients maximum
positive exposure in all the mediums of the multi-faceted 24-hour
international media we all live in. Doing a solid job of promotion
is not only tremendously important to their clients, but a very difficult
juggling act as well.
That
being understood, there simply can be too much promotion. And the
stereotypical overloaded in your face example is with the band Jed.
An inch thick binded booklet chock full of pictures, articles and
damn near everything (except maybe a note from their mother) is what
accompanied their CD. Now, that would be acceptable if the Beatles,
Led Zeppelin or possibly even Soundgarden reunited, but Jed? Who the
fuck is Jed? That statement comes to mind immediately after seeing
the fucking scrapbook of articles praising this unknown band.
Now,
the point with all this is, if you go in blind and don't know anything
about the band, then that thought never happens, but with the ridiculous
uber-promotion, the band better be the second coming of Christ to
measure up. The name of the promo company will remain unmentioned
as we all know who we are, when we look in the mirror each day. Don't
we?
As
for the music itself, it is simply a thinly veiled Tool cover band.
Each and every song sounds like Tool. Everything sounds just like
Tool except the ability of the guitarist, bass player, drummer and
lead singer aren't 50% as talented as the actual Tool members. Not
to mention the terrible lead singer's voice, the guitar riff rip-offs
etc.
What a complete waste of time and paper. And the timing
couldn't have been any worse with Tool debuting at #1 just a few weeks
ago.
