Every once in a while you come across a disc that is truly amazing.
This is NOT one of those times. Gaia Disc brings us Mad King Ludwig.
Digging right into this painful listening experience one notices that
the vocal performances are uninspired and overly whiney. The band
has two vocalists more than likely because they couldn't figure out
which one was better. Both seem to whine through each and every song.
Imagine The Cure vocalist Robert Smith style vocals.
Mad
King Ludwig's lyrics seem to have been written while the band is on
an acid trip. Unfortunately it wasn't a good trip and the lyrics come
out as just plain weird. The band gives us songs about, of all things,
sand. As if that wasn't enough we have a song about the journey of
tumbleweed. You could forgive the silly lyrics if the music was good
but it isn't. Neither the lyrics nor the music ever improve. There
are no bright spots on this album.
You
would hope that you could find a redeeming quality in the production,
but alas it was not to be. Production is muddy, hard to listen to.
Seems the producer was using the same drugs the band was on while
writing the lyrics. The only instrument that seems to stand out is
the bass. You would think that if the producer rushed the bass to
the stand out in the mix it would be because the bassist was playing
an interesting bass line. But he wasn't, which leaves the listener
wondering why it stands out in the mix. The rest of the instruments
combine to make industrial type noise.
In
summery, Mad King Ludwig is a band that tries to be different just
for the sake of being different, not actually because they have something
bright and new to offer. They fail miserably. This is a CD best avoided.
