Sabu
Heartbreak MTM Classix

by Edwin van Hoof
Staff Writer

Comments: Sabu is the guru of pomp, and this Heartbreak is simply irresistible to all fans of the genre. It has all the right ingredients with roaring guitars, sizzling solos, megalithic choirs, pompous keyboards and ear mingling vocals. Every song on this disc is a hit in pump!
There is just to much said about this debut from the mighty Paul Sabu! This record is one that has to be featured in the collection of every fan of melodic rock and pomp.

The sheer power and thick layers of guitars in combination with the swirling keys and thundering bass and drum form a dense hard rocking sound that set new standards in the eighties. Terms like arena rock and pomp sprouted, but it is the Sabu sound that marked releases like Alexa's debut, the Only Child releases, Sabu, Kourosh and the Kidd Glove records. They all bared the distinguishing mark of the man's geniality.

Whether you rock on the full frontal pomp rockers "Angeline", "Heartbreak" and "Tuff Stuff", stamping and thundering neckbreakers such as "Shake, Rattle, Roll" or "Hot Flash", the keyboard driven passionate "Call of the Wild", "Still Alive" and "Just for the moment", or the more intimate semi ballad "Breakin' Out"; this record has it all. "Breakin' Out" for instance that unloads so much power in its refrain, it can hardly be called a ballad at all. The slow moving and intimate setting is contrasting like day and night with the theme, but still feels passionate and intimate. The guitar solo from Paul is amazing!

"New Girl in Town" again goes full speed down the highway ending the original tracklist of this landmark!
The offered demo tracks down grade the overall quality of this classic slightly. Though it is a treat for every fan to hear tracks which where shelved for many years, the quality differs too much production-wise. Drum computers will nerve you to the fullest. The tracks itself blend in with the original songs, with "Cassie" being a semi-ballad (again), and "Street Angel" a hard raving rocker. "Shake it Out" is an un-Sabu-ish track with a sunshine feel in the likes of Huey Lewis and The News and Katrina & The Waves.

MTM Classix re-issue another gem which even in the past re-issue by Long Island sold out instantly. This new edition offers the best of quality from one of the best singer/songwriters and producers in the scene and is an asset of rock. A gem cherished by many and now accessible to all!
