Khlyst
Chaos is My Name Hydra Head Records

Comments: Everyone understands the human need to want to be different and unique. There is also nothing wrong with creating a concept album. In the case of Khlyst’s Chaos is My Name, neither of these is achieved and it fails miserably. Its label, Hydra Head, speaks of a “sense of freedom … an unadulterated creative blood flow” but what you get here is anything but creative. Having some sense of cohesion would have been nice but absolutely none is present here. The label also says it was created all over the world in bits and pieces, which makes sense as it has nothing even resembling a united band’s quality of togetherness.

There is nothing that resembles a song here either and none of the instrumentation is even clearly audible with all the sounds screams and cries overdubbed throughout. Earlier this year, a brilliant band named Ensoph from Italy created a near masterpiece of individuality worthy of high marks and praise from this Web site, but they at least had some sort of structure to go with all the emptiness and malevolent malaise.

The songs of this CD are numbered up to eight and not titled, but there is so little substance what names could they have created. A wicked screaming vocal that is so vile and ridiculous that Cannibal Corpse would seem tame if compared is luckily only featured in a few of the eight tracks. If this band has any talent at all, it is not discernable by listening to the torturous screams what seems to be the blank solitude of a rotting corpse and random drums thrown in. Labeled as brutal or extreme Metal, this release leaves you wonder where the hell the metal is.

This is as big a waste of your time you could ever imagine. At best, it could be used for the SAW III movie score, but even that would bore the hell out of half the movie goers. Sure there are some cool parts and the macabre sounding ambiences are scary, but as a fan of music this simply does not qualify.

As far as recommendations, if the band has any talent or enjoys playing any real sort of rock or metal, please do so and we will review that.
