Faber Drive
Seven Second Surgery 604 Records

by Curt Hauff
Staff Writer

Faber Drive - Seven Second Surgery Comments: Seven Second Surgery is easily one of the best pop/rock albums released this year. Even if the album sucked, the incredible alliteration in the title would be worth the purchase price. Fortunately, it only takes one spin through the disc to get the music wedged up in the frontal lobe of your head. In fact, if you’re not singing along by the second chorus of any given song, you probably should have gotten a second opinion on that lobotomy procedure.

Faber Drive sounds like Junior and Hedley got together for the weekend. They’re a little Simple Plan and Good Charlotte with some Bowling for Soup spackled on for texture. As with the aforementioned bands, the song writing on this album is exceptional and the arrangements are superb. It’s not a big shocker that the band happens to be signed to Chad Kroeger’s label.

The first two tracks, both instant rock anthems, kick off the album with a high energy and up tempo feel. “Second Chance” slows things down just a bit. Although it’s a ballad, it has a nice production that doesn’t make it feel like you’re listening to a “slow song”.

In addition to “24 Story Love Affair” and “Tongue Tied”, “Obvious” is another obvious instant hit. Another cool track that sneaks up on you is “Sleepless Nights”. It’s a heart-felt song that’s really a ballad, but Faber sings it with such conviction and emotion that it really gets you pumped up.

If you’ve spent any time on the easy listening or adult rock channels, you may find “When I’m With You” a bit familiar sounding. The first line of the chorus sounds vaguely like an Air Supply song. It’s probably the soaring vocal line and the string section.

Very rarely do you find an album that you can sing along through every song from start to finish. Seven Second Surgery is one of those albums. It’s already shooting up the charts in Canada and is starting to gain steam in the United States as well. By this Fall, Faber Drive will be playing arena shows across North America. If you pride yourself on being the first to “discover” the hot new bands, you’ll have to hurry with these guys.
